Tips for yoga teachers teaching a large class event

Yoga teacher

Leading a class that has hundreds, maybe even thousands of people can be incredibly intimidating. I have been fortunate enough to teach at some pretty awesome events like the Lole white 2017 tour in Ottawa, Ottawas parliament hill yoga, multiple large fundraiser events and festivals such as Ottawa’s City of Om.

I always get so excited to instruct at events because of its a whole different challenge than leading a regular class. There are so many pieces you have to consider and it can really make the difference between an ok class and an AMAZING one. So here are a few tips on how to deliver the best possible class that you can!

1. Be you!

The biggest mistake you can make is trying to be someone that you are not. You can pull inspiration from other teachers but don’t teach a class that isn’t authentic to you.

2. Breathe

When teaching at a special event it can stir up lots of nerves. The class might be in a setting that we might not be used too and it might have A LOT more people than you are used to. So come back to your breath often so that you can settle down the nerves and they don’t get the best of you.

3. Don’t worry about what is out of your control.

If the class is taking place outdoors then do not get caught up in the weather or things you can’t control. The weather will be what it will be. Put your energy into things you can control like delivering an awesome class no matter what mother nature throws at you!

4. Get grounded.

Before you start the class find a quiet spot to sit and get grounded. Detach from any negative or anxious thoughts. Use your breathing to find focus and clarity.

5. Have fun

Bring your personality to the table! It can be a hard thing to do in a large group setting but, allow your students to see your awesome personality! It will make your students remember you!

Teaching to a large group of people is not easy but it can be a lot of fun! The more you do it the more comfortable you will get being in that setting.
