Tips on flying with a baby

July 21, 2019

When my baby was about 5 months old he went on his first airplane ride. I was so nervous because I did not know what to expect. We were flying from Ottawa to British Columbia with a stop over in Calgary. So all together it was about 7 hours flying time.

Before getting onto the plane I had so much anxiety about a lot of things. I didn’t want to ruin people’s experience if Kash was crying and fussy. I was so worried about his little ears and if he was going to eat ok. There were so many stories I was telling myself and I wasn’t even on the plane yet. I had to give myself a quick reality check so before we got onto the plane so I took a moment, closed my eyes and too a few deep breaths.

I learned a lot from that trip and when we flew again when he was about 8 months I felt a little more comfortable.

So here are a few tips that I have for you if you are flying with a baby.

  1. Take a few deep breathes. When you start to get overwhelmed and anxious. Check in with yourself before you get on the plane and then when you are in the air and the baby wont calm down no matter what you do, come back to your breathe and center yourself.
  2. Let go of what you think everyone else is thinking. A baby cries and if someone gets upset about it then thats not your stuff to take on, you got enough going on. Most people have headphones these days and won’t even notice.
  3. Timing. Try to time it out so that when you are in the air the baby is ready to feed and sleep. Try to feed the baby when you go up and when you come down, it will help with the change in elevation for their ears.
  4. Move around. It’s ok to walk up & down the aisle multiple times until they calm down.
  5. Snacks. The second time we flew out I brought a lot of finger food snacks and that kept him busy for a while.

The biggest thing that I have taken away so far about flying with an infant is that if your freaking out, the baby will too. So pay attention to your thoughts and try to detach from the negative narrative that you might be telling yourself. Breathe in & Breathe out and most importantly have fun!
